Ft. Pitt Tunnel Inbound Reopens After Emergency Repairs
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Fort Pitt Tunnels are now fully re-opened, making it a little easier for the thousands of people packing into Downtown Pittsburgh for the Saint Patrick's Day festivities this weekend.
PennDOT crews completely closed the inbound side of the tunnels at 9 p.m. Friday so emergency repairs could be made inside.
There was a problem with the suspended ceiling.
Deteriorating support brackets were causing it to sag.
According to PennDOT officials, workers removed a 10-foot by 30-foot section of the ceiling.
The tunnels reopened just after 4 a.m.
For much of Friday afternoon and evening, the approach to the tunnel on the Parkway West was down to one lane.
It created traffic nightmares for many as back-ups reached nearly seven miles.
