Friends Come To Each Other's Aid During Franklin Regional Attack
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Brett Hurt says it all happened so fast. He doesn't recall a heroic move; instead, he remembers it as a playful push.
"The only thing I remember is messing around with Gracey and bumping her out of the way," said the 16-year-old Franklin Regional High School student.
But Gracey Evans says the timing of that push saved her during the stabbing rampage.
"If my best friend wouldn't have stepped in front of me, I probably would have been injured," said Gracey. "I probably would have been the one that was stabbed and not him, but he took the knife for me."
Hurt had been stabbed in the back, his lung bruised.
"And then it just like all hit, she was screaming," said Brett. What was going through my mind? Will I survive or will I die?"
Evans noticed another student whose wound seemed even more serious, so she used paper towels to put pressure on it.
Once an EMT took over, she turned back to Brett.
"My best friend was screaming in pain, and he was in major pain, and I just held his hand and didn't let go of him," said Gracey.
She says she held on, even in the ambulance and all the way to the hospital.
"Gracey saved my life," said Brett.
And for that, Brett's mother is incredibly grateful to Gracey.
"I've already hugged her and kissed her. I have told her thank you, and there's nothing in the world that I can do for that girl to make up for what she's done," said Amanda Leonard, Brett's mom.
"We owe her a lot," added Brett.
