Former Pirate Jack Wilson On McCutchen: "That Guy Is Incredible"
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - Former Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson has found himself around the organization more and more recently as he represented the team at the 2014 MLB Draft and even played in the AA Altoona Curve "Heroes Game" in which former Curve alumni played against members of the Wounded Warrior Program.
In between all of that, Wilson caught up with Starkey and Mueller to talk about how he stays busy these days and what he thinks of the Pirates' success.
When it came to talking about the Pirates, Wilson had high praise for reigning NL MVP Andrew McCutchen.
"I'd take Cutch in pretty much every competition," Wilson said. "That guy is incredible and he's doing some amazing things and he's fun to watch."
Wilson went on to talk about watching McCutchen grow from his early days with the Pirates when they played together to where he is now.
Wilson also weighed in on the All-Star Game controversy of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright admittedly grooving pitches to Yankees' superstar Derek Jeter.
"At least when I played I thought of it still as an exhibition game," Wilson said. "To have it worth something was never something I thought of as far as winning the game. Whether he grooved it or not, I know Adam, like he said, it's not in his heart to just lay it in there. But it's also a pretty special moment for a guy like Derek Jeter and going in, and if you leave it a little over the plate, that kind of happens. At the same time, you're probably going to get booed out of your mind if you strike him out to lead off the game, so it's not the worst idea."
Click the audio link below to hear more from Wilson as he talked about how hard it was at times to deal with all the losing when he played for the Pirates, how veterans like Jason Kendall welcomed young guys to the team when they got called up and what role he'd possibly like to have working with the Pirates in the future.
