Fire Destroys Armstrong County Meat Packing Company
WAYNE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Fire destroyed a meat packing business in Armstrong County Wednesday morning.
The fire started around 1:30 a.m. at Dayton Packing on Slaughterhouse Road in Wayne Township, just outside of Dayton.
Twenty foot flames and smoke billowed from the back half of the building.
The business was owned by a couple who lives in a mobile home next door. Fire officials say the owners just bought the business and had it up and running in June.
Neighbor and family friend Bart Brown knew something was wrong when he heard fire trucks outside.
"I'm friends with the owner. I've put a lot of time in up here. Not real happy about it," Brown said.
Brown said the business had been doing pretty well.
"We did a lot of cleaning up around here. He just got a new mobile home put in. Did a lot of work to the place," Brown said.
Firefighters say the blaze was not a threat to the mobile home.
Fire companies from both Armstrong and Indiana Counties were on scene fighting the flames for hours.
Firefighters had to transport water from the local municipality and a farm down the road.
"We had water tankers from local companies from around here coming in so it wasn't an issue as far as running out of water," Dayton Fire Department Assistant Chief Barry Lockhart said.
Fortunately, no live animals were inside the building, and no one was hurt. However, the owner lost any meat that was already butchered.
Lockhart says it's unclear how the fire started. The fire marshal will arrive on scene later in the day to try and determine the cause of the fire.
