Fire Rips Through 2 Buildings In New Kensington
NEW KENSINGTON (KDKA)- Firefighters are looking into the cause of a big fire in New Kensington.
It started around 11 p.m. Thursday in the 400-block of Tenth Street.
When firefighters arrived, the rear of two buildings were fully engulfed in flames. Officials called in additional units from surrounding communities to help fight the fire.
The building where the fire started was destroyed, the other building was heavily damaged.
Two people living in one of the buildings escaped unharmed, they are being assisted by the Red Cross.
Firefighters say these types of buildings lead to a tough fire fight.
"Problem with these buildings here, they are constructed and reconstructed. They have roof upon roof upon roof, and it's tough to get to the fire like this when it gets into the roofs of everything," said New Kensington Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Davis.
Another concern for firefighters was a wall, that nearly collapsed.
"This wall out here is bowing off to the side, we are worried about it coming down. We have it taped off and we're going to keep it taped off. It will be up to the city engineers to come out and look at it, and figure out what to do," said Asssitant Chief Davis.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
