DAWSON (KDKA) - An 11-year-old boy was flown to a hospital after being struck by a train while he was riding his bicycle in Fayette County.

According to emergency dispatchers, the incident happened in Dawson around 10 a.m.

A family friend identifies the boy as Kevin Nicholson.

He was on his bike at the intersection of Stoffer Road and Railroad Street when he was struck.

Nicholson was flown to Children's Hospital of UPMC, but his condition remains unknown. He suffered possible head and leg injuries.

Delina Thomas, of Dawson, says it's believed the train clipped the back of the bike. She says the boy was talking and alert when paramedics arrived.

A woman who works at the corner store and doesn't want her name used says she's been crying all day long. She says she warns the neighborhood kids about the danger of the trains all the time.

State Police say that CSX Railroad Police are investigating.

A spokesperson for CSX didn't know whether the train conductor was able to see the boy and even began the process of slowing the train down.

The speed limit through the Laughlin Street crossing is 30 miles an hour for trains.

CSX released a statement which in part reads:

"CSX personnel are working on-site with local law enforcement as they investigate, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic accident."

There are warning lights at the crossing but no gates.
