Father shot, killed on porch in Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG, Pa. (KDKA) — One person is dead after a shooting in Wilkinsburg.

A 40-year-old man, Walter Sloan, was shot and killed on the porch of a home Monday near the intersection of Pitt Street and Holmes Street. Detectives say 18 to 20 shots were fired, and the victim was shot several times.

A woman and several children were inside the house when the victim was gunned down. A witness told KDKA-TV that he heard the shots and then a car speeding away.

Right now, police aren't saying whether this was a drive-by shooting, but they say they do know the spray of bullets came from more than one gun.

"We're still working on collecting video from the neighborhood to see if we can identify somebody or get any leads," Allegheny County Police Lt. Venerando Costa said.

Police and EMS were called to the area around 4:45 p.m. No one is in custody at this time, police said.

Sloan's sister described him as cool, calm and rational. She said he has four children and was a fierce defender of the people he loved. She along with his neighbors are devastated his life was cut short.

"He's gone," said one neighbor who wants to remain anonymous for her own safety. "His babies will never know their father. That's horrible. And his mother, I can't imagine what that woman is going through right now."

The neighbor fears for her grandchildren in the future.

"It's ridiculous. I am afraid for my grandkids. I am. I'm afraid for myself. But you know what, I'm 62 years old. If I died tomorrow, I've at least lived. My grandkids -- I'm scared."

She's also scared for the other kids who play on the street and heartbroken for this family who just lost their loved one.

"I'm devastated. I'm so sorry that these people have to go through this, right at this time of year. Any time is horrible to lose a child."
