NEW STANTON (KDKA) -- An 11-year-old boy was killed in a crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. between New Stanton and Donegal in Westmoreland County.

The Westmoreland County coroner's office says 11-year-old Hayden M. Field, of Connellsville Township in Fayette County, was sitting in the front seat of a 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup truck.

For an unknown reason, the 49-year-old man who was driving the pickup truck crashed into the back of a Freightliner tractor trailer.

The pickup truck ended up under the back of the trailer, and Field was trapped in the truck.

Field was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:48 p.m.

The coroner's office says Field was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to a local hospital with suspected serious injuries. State Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The tractor trailer driver was not injured.

The crash blocked all lanes between New Stanton and Donegal in Mount Pleasant Township for several hours.
