Cyclist Killed In Oakland Crash
OAKLAND (KDKA) – A cyclist died after being hit by a car in Oakland at about 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Police say a woman on a bicycle was trapped between two cars in a chain reaction accident near the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Bellefield. She died in the hospital "from injuries to her trunk," the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Her death was ruled accidental.
She has been identified as 34-year-old Susan Hicks of the city's Morningside neighborhood. Our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report she was an assistant director the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Russian and East European Studies.
Saturday, Michael J. Bane told the newspaper that his vehicle was involved in the accident and was hit from behind while he was waiting at a red light. He told them he didn't realize there was a cyclist behind him until he got out of his car.
"... I kneeled down beside the lady and started to see if she was awake, see if she was all right, tried to speak with her ..." Michael J. Bane, 39, of Squirrel Hill, told the Post-Gazette.
Bike Pittsburgh is planning a candlelight vigil for Hicks at 5 p.m. on Forbes Avenue outside Carnegie Music Hall.
