FAA Investigating US Airways Emergency Landing In Philly
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The FAA is investigating after US Airways Flight 1702, which was headed from chilly Philadelphia to the warm weather of Fort Lauderdale, was forced to make an emergency landing just after taking off from Philadelphia International Airport.
The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. when the Florida-bound plane abruptly landed at the end of a runway, just a moment or so after passengers had settled in their seats and were buckled in.
It appears the pilot was forced to abort the flight after the aircraft blew a tire on takeoff.
The front landing gear of the plane then collapsed as the Airbus made the emergency landing.
The plane then sat for hours, nose down, on the closed runway.
A US Airways spokesman said there were 149 passengers on the aircraft and a crew of five.
Some of the passengers were seen running from the aircraft after sliding down emergency chutes which had inflated, others came down the main exit.
There were no serious injuries, and one passenger asked for medical assistance after the scary landing.
