Emaciated Dog "Effie" 12 Pounds Heavier At Weigh In

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It seems that an emaciated dog found "near death" in Homewood is out of the woods and steadily gaining weight.

Effie weighed 14 pounds and was very ill when officials seized her in January. She required surgery to unblock her intestines because she was forced to eat whatever she could find.

In a video posted by the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society Friday, Effie stepped on the scale and weighed in at 26 pounds.

A recent update from the humane society reads:

"This little girl who was barely surviving when she came under our care, and got through a surgery 50 pounds underweight, is now a happy, loved and full-bellied pup. She still has a ways to go. Thanks to everyone for your support."

Meanwhile, Effie's owner, Gerald Walker, Jr. is facing animal cruelty charges. His mother, Tia Matthews is charged with terroristic threats and intimidating a witness.
