Drivers Getting Used To New 70 MPH Speed Limit

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Most of the 70 miles per hour signs are up now across Pennsylvania, and so are the speeds.

Folks driving Interstate 79 on Wednesday north of Cranberry said that drivers have quickly adjusted to the new speed limit.

"Higher than 70 miles per hour," said Steve Susa, of Fayette County.

"Beyond 70, I'm afraid," said Gayle Ross, of Buffalo, New York. "They're really moving."

"They are doing much, much, much faster than 70," added Lisa Rose, of Raleigh, North Carolina.

KDKA set up shop with our radar gun in the Zelinople area and quickly saw speeds into the mid-70s, but that was about it.

"Seventy-five miles per hour seems to be the average out there," said Ron Murray, of Meadville. "A couple of people are speeding faster than that."

"Probably 80," added Marlene Helm, of Ohio Township. "There have been a lot of cars that have passed me, and I'm sticking with 70."

KDKA's John Shumway saw what she meant when we moved a bit further north to the Grove City overpass. In fact, we clocked one driver at 93 miles per hour. But overall 70 to 77 was the norm.

State police say they are not really surprised by the speeds we saw today with our radar gun.

In fact, they say if they are using a radar gun, they can't give you a ticket until you are traveling at least six miles per hour over the speed limit.
