Mars Area Middle School student hit by vehicle crossing Route 228
ADAMS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) — A Mars Area Middle School student was hit by a car while crossing Route 228 on Tuesday night, the district superintendent said in a letter to families.
Calling the crash that happened between Three Degree Road and Dori Drive around 5:30 p.m. "a very traumatic event," Superintendent Mark Gross said the student was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A witness said a group of young girls was trying to cross busy Route 228. As they started running across the street, one of the 13-year-old girls was hit by an oncoming car. Adams Township police say the driver remained on scene and has cooperated fully.
The witness believed the girls were headed to Sheetz, which is across Route 228 from the school.
The Sheetz just opened this year, and many believe there needs to be some sort of crosswalk or pedestrian light because more students will undoubtedly try to cross Route 228 to get to the store.
Citing respect for the student and her family, Gross didn't offer any more details on her condition or the extent of her injuries. Police said she was flown to the hospital.
The superintendent said counselors will be available at the middle school to help any students or staff.
"At this time, I ask that you please join me in keeping this student and her family in your thoughts and prayers today, and in the coming days, while we remain hopeful for a full recovery," Gross' letter said.
