Driver Arrested For DUI After Hitting Police Car, Flipping Over On Parkway North

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- A man is facing charges after hitting a police car that was involved in a traffic stop.

It all happened around 10 p.m. along the Parkway North in Ross Township.

State police say two Ross Township police officers were parked in the left lane of Interstate 279 south, when a 35-year-old driving a Nissan Altima, hit the back of the Ross Township Ford Explorer.

The Altima flipped and rolled onto its roof along the Parkway North, coming to rest across both southbound lanes.

"It appears as though Ross Township was out on a traffic stop in the left hand lane. Operator number one, the unit that eventually rolled over, rear-ended the back of one of those vehicles - one of those police vehicles that was unoccupied," said Trooper Robin Mungo, from the Pennsylvania State Police Pittsburgh barracks.

Police have not released the name of the driver. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Neither of the officers conducting the traffic stop were hurt.

Both the police SUV and the car that rolled over had significant damage.

"We suspect that it was a DUI," said Trooper Mungo. "So, we're just waiting for test results. "

State police say all drivers should be cautious when they see police lights on the highway.

"When you see lights that are activated, no matter what lane it's in," said Trooper Mungo. "You need to make sure you slow down and you can yield to that traffic stop."
