Downtown Hotel Evacuated For Four-Alarm Fire
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - People staying at a downtown hotel had to evacuate their rooms Sunday night.
Around 6 p.m. fire crews were called to the DoubleTree by Hilton on Bigelow Square.
When they arrived, crews found a fire in the ventilation system on the roof of the hotel. Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler says its standard procedure to call out a "three-alarm fire" when it comes to high rise buildings. She said a fourth alarm was added just to be safe.
Everyone staying at the hotel was evacuated.
"There's a parking garage on the other side and it opened up, and as I pulled in there were people yelling," said Scott Cabel, of Erie. "Get out, all of the sudden a firetruck blocked us in there. It was chaotic."
Firefighters put out the flames quickly and everyone was able to return to their rooms after the smoke dissipated.
Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
