Downtown Bus Shelter Becoming Known As "Pittsburgh's Smallest Jazz Club"
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Which would you rather do? Wait at a bus stop, or listen to the mellow sound of jazz?
The bus shelter at Ninth Street and Liberty Avenue, eastbound, now has both. The music is piped in by musicians at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild. It is also known as "Pittsburgh's Smallest Jazz Club."
MCG jazz spokesman Marty Ashby says it's just another way the Craftsmen's Guild reaches out to the community.
"We believe that jazz is for everyone, so we thought let's take it to the streets, and have people have something to do while they're waiting for the bus and enjoy some of the great music that was created over on the North Side."
MCG Jazz enters its 29th concert season in October. Meanwhile, recorded audio has transitioned from concert hall to bus stop.
"It sounds fantastic in there," Ashby says. "It sounds like my living room. It's really a great sound that they've got."
It's received good reviews from bus riders and passersby, alike.
"I think this is really nice, especially if you've been waiting a long time," says bus rider Christine Nixon of the Hill District. "It's something to smooth your nerves, you know. Keep you calm while you wait."
With the success at Ninth and Liberty, will other bus stops follow suit?
"It's entirely possible," Marty Ashby says, "This one's working out, so it may organically grow, as they say."
