1 Killed After Car Pinned Under School Bus In Gibsonia
HAMPTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Police are investigating a crash where a school bus drove over a car, smashing it and killing the driver.
It happened just before 8 a.m. Friday near East Hardies Road and Route 8 in Gibsonia, near the Sheetz.
KDKA's Paul Martino Reports:
Officials say the crash happened as the school bus was heading south on Route 8. As the bus tried to make a left turn at the light, a pickup truck driver headed in the opposite direction slammed into the bus so hard that the bus' wheels lifted up, landing on a Nissan sedan stopped at the stop light.
Emergency responders worked to pull a man out of the Nissan. However, he was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old John Krauland, Jr. According to the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, he was the loss control coordinator in the diocesan office for Parish Property Planning and Development.
He was a graduate of Slippery Rock University and was hired by the Diocese in 2011.
KDKA's Paul Martino Reports:
Bishop David Zubik released a statement following the crash.
It reads in part: "John was a very good man, a good husband, a good son and a good son-in-law. There are no words to explain tragedies like this one. We can only be grateful for another tragedy on a Friday long ago. What Jesus did on Calvary and with the empty tomb gives all of us hope that this life is not all that there is. May this tragedy become an important lesson for all of us to stop and take time to appreciate the people we live with and work with."
KDKA's Heather Abraham Reports:
Officials say there were no children on the bus at the time of the crash.
The bus driver is also said to be OK, but the pickup driver was taken to the hospital after complaining of neck pain.
Krauland leaves behind a wife of four years.
