Fatal Crash Closes Rt. 65 For Hours In Sewickley
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – State Police are looking into a deadly head-on crash on Route 65 in Sewickley.
Just before 5:00 p.m. on Monday, police say 69 year old Don Coast of Rochester was driving a sports car when he crossed the center line and hit a Peterbilt truck head on.
State Police say Coast was ejected from the vehicle, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man who had to swerve to avoid the crash described what he saw: "I heard a big crash and right in front of me there was truck that looked like it was going to tip over. When the car hit the truck, the truck lost control. It was headed in my lane, right at me. I swerved around the truck, hit the high curb and blew the tire out in my car."
According to the police report, Coast was weaving in and out of traffic prior to the crash. He also was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the truck, 32 year old Joseph Brewer, was not seriously hurt.
The witness KDKA talked to said that his own vehicle went off the road and hit an embankment, as he swerved to avoid the oncoming truck. His son suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. He says he was the first witness to run over to the victim to try to help, but he says he quickly realized there was nothing he could do.
Route 65 was shut down in both directions between Interstate 79 ramp and Beaver Street for about two hours.
Traffic started moving in one lane in both directions a little after 7:00 p.m. The highway has since completely reopened to traffic.
