Colligan: Pens Should Look For Depth Winger
PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Mike Colligan of The Hockey Writers joined Tab Douglas and Joe Rhoades Saturday morning to talk about the Pens. They asked Colligan what general manager Jim Rutherford's priorities should be in the new year.
"I would look for more of a depth winger, so someone of the ilk of Pascal Dupuis," Colligan said. "Just finding a guy that can move up and down the lineup."
Colligan said a longer-term project will be to figure out what the makeup of the top six forwards will look like.
"What's the future of this top six lineup look like?" Colligan asked. "I think if you can find a younger top six guy, like when they acquired James Neal for example or Patric Hornqvist, a longer term solution that's obviously going to cost a lot more but I think finding that would be a project he'd (Jim Rutherford) love to take care of this year as well."
Colligan also thinks that the defense needs to be evaluated.
"I think they have some big questions there with Christian Ehrhoff and Paul Martin as free agents at the end of the year. Who stays, who goes, what does that look like? And once you figure that out, I think they've got to start moving some of these defensive prospects and figuring out over the next two years here what that group (will) look like," Colligan said.
