Homicide Charges Filed Against Caretakers For Man's 2015 Death
PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- Two people are now facing homicide charges after a man they were taking care of died last year.
According to court papers, this couple began caring for the man who died after his original caretaker passed away. He's also described in these papers as having mental health issues and operating on the level of a 5-year-old.
"Didn't really know them, pretty much kept to themselves. Quiet," neighbor J.P. Mahlmeister said. "You know, I'd wave when they'd come up, and that was pretty much it."
Mahlmeister was shocked to learn what allegedly happened a few doors down inside a home on Saint Rose Drive in Penn Hills.
Police say Pamela McNeal and Adam Haynes failed to get medical help for the man they were supposed to be carrying for, 54-year-old David Fuhrman.
They reportedly began caring for Fuhrman years before, when they lived in Crafton.
According to a criminal complaint, police responded to the home in Penn Hills in November of last year after Haynes triggered a 911 call using his car's OnStar system.
Police say they found Fuhrman dead in his bed, severely malnourished, only weighing 76 lbs., with multiple sores and wounds on his back and elbows.
The criminal complaint states that McNeal told police Fuhrman became unable to eat solid food in May of 2015, and he didn't want to leave bed starting in July when a large bedsore was discovered.
He died in November.
Police allege the couple hadn't gotten him medical help since a year before.
Mahlmeister is sickened by the charges.
"Very upsetting to get down to 76 lbs., that's a lot of neglect," he said. "Not much food at all."
