Canonsburg Officer's Death Leaves Community In Shock

CANONSBURG (KDKA) - People in Canonsburg were shocked and saddened to learn the news of Officer Scott Bashioum's death.

The Canonsburg community is hurting as investigators piece together the end to a horrific situation.

Neighbors began to come out of their homes and talk to each other around 9 a.m. Earlier, they had been told to stay inside and away from the windows.

They learned from newscasts that two officers had been shot and one of them died.

"At 3:15, I heard four shots go off and I just thought it was someone deer hunting," Maria Derrico said. "About 15 minutes later is when I heard the police cars."

"My friend from Florida called me and said two policemen were shot and she's my good friend and that was her son that was shot," Carmen Towchik said.

That woman's son is the officer who underwent surgery at Allegheny General Hospital. He suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and was last listed in stable condition.

This ambush pained the close knit Washington County town. Some watched as the patrol car belonging to one of the officers was towed away. Many residents knew the officers personally.

"Most of them are cops for life. One used to live down the street here and they do a good job around here," Mary Kirby said.
