1 woman killed, another injured after shooting in Brighton Heights near playground
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pittsburgh police said a man shot two women Wednesday in Brighton Heights near Jack Stack Playground.
Trey Champine was playing video games at home when he heard eight gunshots. He ran out and saw a woman shot, so he grabbed some towels and raced over with his mother.
"I just wanted to try, do the best I can to save her," Champine said. "I tried to help her stay awake and put pressure on the blood."
Police were called to respond to the area of Brighton Woods Road by Benton Avenue near the playground around 7:45 p.m. for a shooting.
Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto said it started when a group of kids got into a fight at the pool. It escalated, and after some adults tried to break it up, shots rang out on the streets about 100 yards away.
The two women, believed to be in their early 30s, were both in critical condition at a local hospital. A man believed to be 26 years old surrendered and is in custody as a person of interest.
As of Thursday morning, 35-year-old Darkale Bonner was pronounced dead.

Scirotto said the man was not injured and evidence shows he was the only person who fired shots. He also said they do not know how those involved in the shooting are connected to the children fighting, but they are not the kids' parents.
Scirotto believes this doesn't send the right message to youth in the area.
"People don't have the capacity or the ability of self-control to regulate themselves in a manner that isn't resulting in gun violence when there's conflict, and when guns are readily available, this is what is becoming an all too familiar end in conflict," Scirotto said.
Champine feels the same and just wants the violence to stop.
"I hate it. I'm scared to take my brother outside," Champine said.
A pregnant woman also was hurt while running away but refused to be taken to the hospital.
It's unclear how the fight started.
