Rock star Bret Michaels adopts kitten-saving husky named Bret Michaels

Pittsburgh native Bret Michaels adopting special dog that saved kitten's life

OMAHA, Neb. (KDKA) -- Bret Michaels is adopting Bret Michaels.

The Poison frontman and Butler County native is adopting a 6-year-old husky also named Bret Michaels who gave a life-saving blood transfusion to a kitten with flea anemia.

Bret Michaels (the person) posted a photo of the pup on Instagram with the caption, "He's got everything that says - I'm Bret Michaels A Husky and I've been adopted by Bret Michaels The Rockstar."

Bret Michaels (the dog) was hailed a hero by the Nebraska Humane Society after he stepped up to help a kitten who was brought in as a stray along with his siblings, who were all dirty, cold and covered in fleas.

After a bath, the humane society said two of the kittens were doing well, but the third was wobbly, weak and lethargic, leading vets to believe he had flea anemia.

The humane society said a flea infestation might only affect a small percentage of healthy red blood cells, "but for this tiny guy, the impact was far greater." They said he needed blood right away.

Cats, like humans, have blood types, but there's no "universal donor" type, O-, that can be safely transfused into any other type. The humane society said the kitten couldn't wait for testing to be done to find a feline donor, but there was another way.

That's when Bret Michaels the husky came in.

The humane society said canine blood can be transfused into felines through a common practice called xenotransfusion. "While it's not a permanent solution, it gave our kitten what he needed most: time," they explained.

Since Bret just had bloodwork done, the humane society's vets knew he was a good candidate. Soon after the first round of transfusion, they said the tiny kitten started showing signs of improvement.

"A round of ap-paws for Bret Michaels for being such a calm and brave boy, and to our vet team for their quick thinking. Little man is now on the road to recovery, and Bret Michaels is waiting patiently for his forever family!" the humane society wrote on Facebook.

It turns out he didn't have to wait much longer to find a home after his story went viral. The humane society said word got around to "THE" Bret Michaels, and one phone call later, Bret Michaels the husky is going to live like a rock star.

In another Instagram post, Bret Michaels is now turning his attention to his new mission: finding a home for the kitten, named "Roses & Thorn."
