Body Of 77-Year-Old Woman Found In Car Pulled From Ravine

MAHONING TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Police are investigating after a woman died when he car plunged into a ravine in Lawrence County Tuesday night.

The car was found off of Miller Farm Road in Mahoning Township by Lloyd Weise.

"I was watching the noon news and we heard a noise, like a dump truck dumping its load, didn't think anymore of it. I came back after supper to mow the lawn and saw a car sitting over the bank of the hill," said Weise.

Officials say the car apparently was traveling along Mohawk School Road when it went off the road and down into the ravine.

"The car went through peoples' yards and over an 80-foot drop-off. It's not only 80 feet down, but all three sides are anywhere from 60 to 80 feet straight down," Mahoning Township Fire Chief Francis Exposito said.

When rescue crews got to the car, the 77-year-old woman in the driver's seat was pronounced dead.

So far, the coroner has not identified the woman. An autopsy is expected to be done on Wednesday.

Fire crews had to build a rope system to raise the victim's body out of the ravine. They also had to use heavy machinery and rope to pull the car back up.
