Bob McKenzie: Fleury, Pens Have Something To Prove in Postseason
PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- TSN NHL Insider Bob McKenzie joined Bob Pompeani to talk about the Penguins and the NHL. Pompeani asked McKenzie about Fleury's future.
"I'm generally a Marc-Andre Fleury booster, but there's no question he, like the rest of the Penguins -- and I put him in the same group as everybody else -- they've got something to prove once the regular season is over," McKenzie said. "I think if the contract extension's done properly and that, it's not a bad thing necessarily to make a commitment to him. Number one goalies are hard to come by, and you've got to be careful that you don't throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater."
McKenzie told Pompeani that the type of forward that the Penguins could be looking for by the trade deadline will depend on how they use Evgeni Malkin.
"If they decide to go long haul with Malkin as a winger with (Brandon) Sutter on the proverbial second line, then I think they're probably needing a third line player to try and bolster their depth. If they decide to go back to (Sidney) Crosby, Malkin and Sutter as the 1-2-3 punch in the middle of the ice, then I think they're going to need to find a winger for Malkin," McKenzie said.
