Bessemer Borough man arrested after girlfriend shot to death in couple's home

Police investigation underway in Lawrence County

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A Lawrence County man was arrested after his girlfriend was found shot to death in their Bessemer Borough home early Tuesday morning, state police said.

Investigators from the state police's forensics unit arrived at the scene just before 3 a.m.

The victim, 33-year-old Brandi Genova, was found with several gunshot wounds to the head inside the couple's home on Bestview Avenue, state police said. An autopsy will be done later Tuesday.

The couple's 4-year-old child was reportedly home at the time of the shooting.

Michael Work, 33, was arrested overnight at the Union Square shopping plaza in Union Township. He is charged with criminal homicide and being held in the Lawrence County Jail without bond.

Work's family were the first to call state police Monday night after "he told them he shot his girlfriend" at their home, state police investigators said. The shooting reportedly stemmed from an argument about "infidelity issues," investigators said.

Courtney McKenna has been the couple's landlord for more than five years. She says she woke up to the devastating news.

"I just couldn't believe it because we saw them on Father's Day and there were no signs of anything," McKenna said.

Genova's friends and coworkers gathered at the Bessemer Croatian Club where Genova worked for the last eight years. They said Genova was the kindest person they'd ever met. They said she had a nickname for everyone who came through this door and once you had one, you were considered a friend for life

State police in New Castle are handling the investigation. Police haven't released a motive.
