Beaver Co. Turkey Gobbling Up Friends On Facebook Page
BEAVER COUNTY (KDKA) -- Why did the turkey cross the road? Because that's where the cookies are!
The town of Aliquippa has opened its wings to a turkey named, well, Tom, of course. Tom gets his daily bread down at Stevie's Dari-Mart.
"You can walk right up to him and hand it to him," says owner Bill Zuccaro. "So he's not a bad guy."
He has cell phone shots to prove it.
"He peeks in, to see who's inside," Zuccaro continues. "He walks right up to us."
It's not every bird that has his own Facebook page, with hundreds of followers. It seems everyone in Aliquippa is talking turkey.
"Everyone posts to it," he shop owner adds. "Posts pictures of the turkey to it. I've posted pictures to it."
When crossing the street, Tom counts on the kindness of strangers.
"When he just sat there, I started honking my horn," says driver Nathan Swierkosz. "I started revving my engine. And he just wouldn't leave. Honestly, I thought he was deaf and couldn't hear me."
Tom has even been known to take cookies from strangers. But with Thanksgiving on the horizon, the State Game Commission feels wild turkeys belong in the wild.
Wildlife Conservation Officer Matt Kramer says he's made attempts to trap the bird, but no luck. Apparently, Tom disappears at the mere sight of a Game Commission vehicle.
"He saw the game warden truck, and he went running up towards the woods," Bill Zuccaro recalls. "But he lets everyone else come up to him."
Tom is not just another "turkey in the straw."
