August Wilson Center's Fate Still Unresolved

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A sheriff's sale may still be the fate of Pittsburgh's debt-ridden August Wilson Center for African American Culture.

A consortium of charities was unable to complete the $8.85 million acquisition of the center by a Friday deadline due to an appeal filed by a security firm owed money by the center.

Dollar Bank, which holds the center's $7.9 million delinquent mortgage, says it will now make good on repeated threats to foreclose with no deal by Oct. 31.

But Jim Roddey, board member for The Pittsburgh Foundation, says he thinks the latest hurdle is "just another setback that I'm sure will be resolved."

The center named for the late black Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Pittsburgh native has been plagued by financial and attendance problems since it opened five years ago.
