Andrew McCutchen Kicks Off "Project Pittsburgh"

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)--Former Pittsburgh Pirate and fan-favorite Andrew McCutchen started week of charity work on Saturday. He may no longer play for the team but calls the Steel City home.

"It's the place where I live. Raising my family. It only feels right to have a charity week here," McCutchen said.

It started with Cutch and volunteers worked with seniors from University Prep in Pittsburgh. They were able to get clothes for professional interview from the Macy's in South Hills Village. Counselors also were there to help with interview skills.

"Our kids need to see someone like them, like Andrew who has come from a similar background and is giving back," University Prep Assistant Principal Terri Ayers said.

"I always saw his interview," senior Dashon Cruse said. "He could dress, so when I found out he was helping me pick out a suit, I was excited."

During this week, McCutchen plans to serve meals, clean up the community, and work with children.

He's asking for the community to come out and help the cause.

"I will be able to see how great the city is and I know the city always comes together for whatever cause that there is here. That's what makes the city special," he said before helping students shop for professional clothes.

After all the accolades and accomplishments Cutch made on the field, he hopes people are able to see it doesn't take much to be a star off the field.

"Doesn't matter who you are. Doesn't matter if you've got millions of dollars or just a couple of dollars, there ways you can help and volunteer," he said.

Even though he may play for the other MLB team in Pennsylvania, he still calls Pittsburgh home, and couldn't think of anywhere else to serve.

"It's always going to be home. It's getting to the point that people think I'm from here," Cutch said with a signature laugh.
