Analyst Jay Caufield: Pens Took Momentum In Series With Game 2 Win

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)-Root Sports Analyst Jay Caufield joined the "Cook and Poni Show" on Tuesday following the Penguins' overtime win Monday night.

Sidney Crosby's goal 40 seconds into overtime evened the Eastern Conference Finals at 1-1 as the series shifts to Tampa Bay.

It was Crosby's first game-winning overtime goal in the playoffs and his first goal in eight games.

"It was a great thing for him, great for the team and obviously for the fans," Caufield said. "It was a great win."

Caufield said that he is an old school player who doesn't by into the cyber metrics of a sport, but rather what he sees from his eyes. He feels that the Pens need to get more scoring from Sid and Evgeni Malkin to win this series.

"Guys like that are paid to score goals and put up numbers. They would be the first to tell you that," Caufield said. "You're going to need those guys coming through like [Sid] did last night. That is the bottom line for anybody in positions like that and that is what they would have to do and I think that is what they would tell you."

The Pens appeared to be close to making a switch in goal after Matt Murray allowed two goals to tie the game by the end of the first period. Cauufield said he has done well enough to buy a longer leash, but had he allowed another soft goal there would have been some decisions to be made.

"It happens. It happens to the best of them. There is going to be something that gets through and you have to rebound," Caufield said. "He certainly has the mental strength to do it and he did it again last night."

So, the series is even 1-1 as they head to Tampa for Games 3 and 4. Who has the edge?

"They (Tampa) got outplayed in many areas last night," Caufield said. "In my mind, Pittsburgh took the momentum back."
