Man at center of Ohio Amber Alert shot and killed by police, authorities say
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A man who abducted his 7-year-old daughter, prompting an Amber Alert in Ohio, was shot and killed by officers in the parking lot of a business on Monday night, police said.
The girl, Oaklynn Alexander, was not injured and returned to her family, authorities said.
Ohio Amber Alert ends in deadly police shooting
The Amber Alert in Ohio was issued after 43-year-old Charles Alexander allegedly took his 7-year-old daughter on Monday in Empire, Ohio. The Amber Alert was canceled around 9:30 p.m. on Monday.
CBS affiliate WKBN reported that Charles Alexander reportedly left a family member's home on Monday with the child after an altercation, despite not having custody of the girl. The TV station reported that law enforcement feared for the child's safety.
In a news release on Facebook on Tuesday, the Medina County Sheriff's Office in Ohio said law enforcement located Charles Alexander in Brunswick around 8 p.m. on Monday. Police tried to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 71 south, but the man continued to evade officers.
The post said Charles Alexander's vehicle was then disabled before he exited the interstate at Route 18 in Medina Township. He then stopped in the parking lot of a business, authorities said. The Facebook post said the man "communicated with several dispatch centers by telephone" before law enforcement shot and killed him.
"Multiple gun shots were fired in an officer-involved shooting," the news release said.
The news release did not say if Charles Alexander was armed or why officers opened fire on him. It was also not immediately clear if the girl was in the vehicle during the police shooting, with the news release only saying she was "safely recovered from the scene and returned to family members without injury."
Empire, Ohio, is about one hour from Pittsburgh.
