84 Lumber Owner Buys House For Widow, Son Of Perryopolis Cop

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The widow of a Perryopolis Police Officer, who was killed in the line of duty, will get a new home, thanks to a generous donation.

The owner of 84 Lumber, Maggie Hardy Magerko, says she bought the house Officer Richard Champion and wife Dawn had been renting.

Champion, 34, was killed in December after crashing into an SUV while on duty in Perryopolis.

The driver of the SUV was hospitalized and also later died of his injuries.

In addition to wife Dawn, Champion also leaves behind a 16-month-old son.

Hardy Magerko said she purchased the home in Ligonier and will also pay for some needed repairs.

"Both Dawn and her husband served our country in the military, and Richard furthered that service as a police officer," said Hardy Magerko in a statement. "After seeing the accounts of his service to our country and community I felt it was very appropriate to do what I could do to ensure that Dawn and her son have a safe, and secure home in which to live and relieve her of the burden of having to be concerned with a mortgage and repair and remodeling costs."
