71-Year-Old North Side Woman Shot In Leg While Knitting
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh police say a 71-year-old woman was shot while knitting inside her home on the city's North Side.
Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler says the woman was shot in the leg at 8:54 p.m. Monday in the 400-block of Cedar Avenue.
"She heard the window behind her explode, then she felt a pain in her leg and realized she had been shot," Pittsburgh Police spokesman Sonya Toler said.
Neighbors identified the woman as Jackie Thomas and says she knits all the time, often sitting on the front porch.
"She was inside her home, no one knew she was there, so this is definitely a stray bullet," Toler said.
Police say officers recovered five shell casings near a basketball court across the street.
Gary Collins owns a business nearby and thinks more of a police presence could make a difference.
"It's the innocent that's always involved, it could have been somebody's baby, that could have been my child," Collins said.
Police are unsure what started the shooting or who the target was.
Thomas he was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in stable condition.
An investigation is ongoing and if you have any information give them a call.
