22-year-old bicyclist dies after collision with vehicle in Cranberry Township
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A 22-year-old man has died after his bicycle collided with a vehicle on Tuesday night in Cranberry Township.
According to Cranberry Township police, the bicyclist was traveling northbound on Route 19, near the intersection of St. Francis Way, when preliminary reports suggest a vehicle struck the bicycle from behind as it was in the left lane of traffic.
Officials responded to the crash at approximately 11:43 p.m. Tuesday night and transported the male bicyclist to a hospital where he later died.
"We believe this to be nothing more than a tragic accident," said Cranberry Township Police Chief Kevin Meyer.
The driver, a man in his 60s, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
Police said the bicyclist didn't have on any reflectors and the bike only had a headlamp.
"It's a dangerous location, especially if you're traveling in those weather conditions, in the left lane of traffic, it's extremely dangerous," explained Meyer.
The chief said he feels for the family, especially with the holidays right around the corner.
"It makes it even that much more difficult. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of everybody involved," he said.
Officials are not releasing the name of the bicyclist at this time.
