PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Two people died in a head-on crash on Thursday in Fayette County.

Two people died and three were injured in a crash on July 28, 2002 in Fayette County. KDKA

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. at the 600 block of Walnut Hill Road in Georges Township, county 911 told KDKA-TV.  Three other people were injured, including two small children, officials said. No word on the extent of their injuries.

Police said 29-year-old Tyler Durst of Point Marion was driving eastbound when his vehicle crossed the center line and hit the driver of a pick-up truck traveling westbound.

Durst and his passenger, 27-year-old Mercedes Mecozzi of Uniontown, were pronounced dead at the scene. The three people in the pick-up truck, a father and his two small children, were flown to a hospital in West Virginia.

Mecozzi and Durst were headed to pick up Mecozzi's 10-year-old daughter to take her to the county fair when the crash happened, family members told KDKA-TV on Friday.

Mecozzi's family described her as a loving mother and daughter who would give anyone the shirt off her back.

"She was like the glue," said Angela Brown, Mecozzi's aunt. "She took good care of her dad, Daniel Brown. They lived together. She had just filled up his refrigerator up with groceries and walked out the door and said I love dad and he said I love you and that was it."

"Mercedes was a special person," said Douglas Brown, the victim's uncle. "She took care of my brother. He's good but he needs help. She was always there. She took her life and made her life part of his life."

Police are investigating the crash.
