3 Boys Injured In Greenfield Explosion, Fire

GREENFIELD (KDKA) – Three boys were injured in an explosion in the city's Greenfield neighborhood Monday night.

According to police, the incident happened in the 4100 block of Gladstone Street around 9 p.m.

"When they arrived on scene, two of the juveniles were badly burned from what appeared to be some sort of explosion," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said.  "Later in the evening, another juvenile was transported to the hospital with burns as well."

Pittsburgh fire investigators were on scene and believe two 13-year-old boys and a 7-year-old boy got their hands on some gasoline.

"It was determined that the juveniles were playing with gasoline, using it to set a cardboard box on fire," Schaffer said.

SURVEILLANCE VIDEO:

A 13-year-old's clothes caught on fire and he suffered second and third-degree burns all over his body.

The 7-year-old suffered second-degree burns to his face. Both of the boys were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital.

"I saw a kid run across the street, and I saw a big fireball fall off of him, and it hit the street, and he ran straight back to his house, and me and my dad came out," said neighbor Dylan Kichi, 9.

Dylan watched the scene from his bedroom window.

"The reason why he saw the fireball fall off of him... that was his clothes falling off of him. His clothes burning," said Gary Kichi, Dylan's father.

KDKA's Heather Abraham Reports:

A third boy was initially taken to Children's Hospital, but has since been transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital with serious burns.

All three boys are in stable condition.

It's unknown if the boys or any adults will face any charges.
