PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A crash on the 10th Street Bypass killed one man and sent four people to the hospital on Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. under the 6th Street Bridge and shut the road down for hours.

Officials say an SUV was travelling east on the 10th Street Bypass when it skidded, crashed into a concrete barrier, overturned and collided with a white sedan that was travelling west.

A third vehicle crashed into a guardrail. That driver, who did not want to be identified, was not injured.

"I was like, this doesn't happen. This is like something in a movie that you would see," he said.

The SUV was driven by a woman who had three children, including a baby, in the car with her. All four people wound up in the hospital in stable condition.

KDKA-TV News talked exclusively with the off-duty firefighter who was the first on scene. Stephen Williams was on his pontoon boat with friends when he heard the sound of the crash.

"We heard the bang and I looked over and on the other side of the river, we saw the car on its roof," he said.

When they got to the scene, Williams saw that the woman and her children had gotten out of their overturned SUV and appeared to be OK, but the driver of the white sedan wasn't moving.

"I was like, 'Sir, are you alright? Sir, are you alright?' He looked right through me. He wouldn't even switch his eyes to look at me," Williams said. "He was bleeding from his head, and he had a pulse for a little bit, and once he lost his pulse, we took him out of his vehicle and I started CPR on him from there."

The man was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He has been identified as 61-year-old Michael Markilinski, of Crescent. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.

Crews worked for hours to reconstruct the accident, using small orange cones and looking closely at the vehicles' tires. No word yet on the cause of the crash.

The 10th Street Bypass was closed until 9 p.m.
