Shocking celebrity breakups
Divorce is about as common in Hollywood as a star on the Walk of Fame, but fans are shocked regardless each time a celebrity couple announces their split.
In October 2016, director Len Wiseman filed for divorce from Kate Beckinsale after 12 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple had met making the first "Underworld" film in 2003.
Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber
In September 2016, actors Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber announced they are separating after 11 years and two children together.
“Over the past few months,” the couple said in a statement, “we’ve come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple.”

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
In September 2016, news broke that one of Hollywood’s most famous (and best looking) couples -- Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie -- planned to end their marriage.
“This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time,” attorney Robert Offer said in a statement obtained by Reuters. TMZ reports Jolie cited irreconcilable differences in her filing. She is reportedly asking for full physical custody of the couple’s six children, but joint legal custody. She will reportedly not be asking for spousal support.

Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale
Don't speak! On August 3, 2015, rock music power couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale issued the following joint statement to People Magazine:
"While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment."
Stefani and Rossdale met when their bands toured together in 1995. Bush's frontman and No Doubt's frontwoman have been a couple ever since; together for nearly 20 years and married for almost 13.
Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert
On July 20, 2015, country music power couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert issued a joint statement to the Associated Press through their representatives.
"This is not the future we envisioned," the former couple said. "And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."
Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert had been married four years, when they confirmed their plans to split after years of rumors in the tabloids.
Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner
On June 30, 2015, Bennifer released a joint statement which read, "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time."
Affleck and Garner had been married ten years at the time of their announcement, and have three young children together.
Melanie Griffith & Antonio Banderas
Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas were married for 18 years before Griffith filed for divorce in June 2014, citing irreconcilable differences. They finalized their divorce in December 2015.
The couple shares a daughter, named Stella, who was 17 at the time.
Gwenyth Paltrow & Chris Martin
Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin had been married for 11 years, when they announced that they would be "consciously uncoupling" in a blog post dated March 2014.
The couple shares two children, somewhat famously named Apple and Moses.
Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have been the picture of young love, albeit tortured young love, since they started dating in 2011.
They have been on-again-off-again ever since, continually shocking fans with numerous thinly veiled references to each other in their respective music videos.
Diane Lane & Josh Brolin
Actors Josh Brolin and Diane Lane divorced in 2013 after eight tumultuous years of marriage, which saw Brolin charged with domestic battery just four months after the pair wed.
Amy Poehler & Will Arnett
Comedy couple Amy Poehler and Will Arnett were a fan favorite, before they split in September 2012.
The pair, who appeared on screen together in both "Arrested Development" and "Parks and Recreation," were married for nine years and have two sons.
Heidi Klum & Seal
Supermodel Heidi Klum and singer Seal announced their plans to divorce in January 2012, after about seven years of marriage.
The passionate couple renewed their vows every year that they were married. They have three children together.
Jennie Garth & Peter Facinelli
"Twilight" star Peter Facinelli filed for divorce from "90210" star Jennie Garth in March 2012, after 11 years of marriage.
The couple, who met on the set of the 1996 made-for-TV movie, "An Unfinished Affair," looked happy on a trip to Disneyland with their three daughters just the year before.
Garth later implied that she was completed blindsided by Facinelli's decision to end the union.
Katy Perry & Russell Brand
Pop star Katy Perry and British bad boy comedian Russell Brand once seemed very much in love. They flew to India, rode elephants side-by-side and were married in a spiritual ceremony.
So, fans were about as shocked as Perry when -- 14 months into the marriage -- Brand sent her a text message, stating his desire to divorce.
That probably wasn’t a part of her “Teenage Dream.”
Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ Hollywood romance leapt into the national consciousness, when Cruise leapt onto Oprah’s couch, while gushing about their connection during a 2005 interview.
So, Katie Holmes stunned both fans and her husband alike, when she suddenly filed for divorce in June 2012.
The couple, who share one daughter, had been married five-and-a-half years at the time. What’s more, Cruise had just finished promoting his new movie “Rock of Ages,” and had sung his wife’s praises to the media just days before.
Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart
On-screen and off-screen “Twilight” star-crossed lovers Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart parted ways in 2012, after Stewart made tabloid headlines with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rubert Sanders.
And to think, so many fans thought Bella and Edward were forever.
Johnny Depp & Vanessa Paradis
Johnny Depp and French actress Vanessa Paradis may have never officially married, but they were together for a whopping 14 years and share two kids.
The couple split in 2012 after about a year of constant rumors in the tabloids that their relationship had hit the skids.
Depp then proposed to actress Amber Heard in 2014, after dating her for only a year.
Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore
When Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore fell in love in 2003, he was 25 and she was 41. They were married two years later and, understandably, nearly everyone was skeptical that their romance would last.
Whenever they appeared in public, however, they looked happy and slowly turned all those skeptics into believers. Maybe age is just a number.
But in November 2011, their “St. Elmo’s Fire” burned out and things rapidly got ugly. Moore changed her Twitter handle from @MrsKutcher to @JustDemi. And in seemingly no time, Kutcher remarried and had a child with new love and fellow “That 70’s Show” co-star Mila Kunis.
Arnold Schwarzenegger & Maria Shriver
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver shocked the world when they split in May 2011, after four kids and 25 years of marriage.
However, it wasn’t the mere fact of their split that stunned people most. It was what the Governator did to cause it.
Shortly after the couple announced their plans to divorce, Schwarzenegger admitted to fathering a child with the couple’s longtime housekeeper, Mildred Patricia Baena. Hasta la vista, marriage.
Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony
After two failed marriages, it seemed Jennifer Lopez had found the perfect match in fellow Latin pop superstar Marc Anthony.
The couple spent seven years together, even giving birth to twins. In the end, though, they split in July 2011... with Jenny returning to “the block,” a single mother.
Courteney Cox & David Arquette
Actors Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who met on the set of the horror film “Scream,” announced their plans to separate in October 2010 after 11 years of marriage.
Unlike many of the other Hollywood couples on this list, however, the pair have remained close. Their daughter’s godmother is also on this list, Jennifer Aniston.
Sandra Bullock & Jesse James
In 2010, actress Sandra Bullock split from her husband Jesse James, just months after she won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for her leading role in “The Blind Side,” and gushed about their relationship in her Golden Globes acceptance speech.
Perhaps that’s why fans were so blindsided, when rumors of the motorcycle mogul’s rampant cheating ultimately surfaced.
Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins
Actors Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins spent 21 years together, leading people to believe that perhaps the key to lasting Hollywood romance is never getting married. They have two sons.
But the pair parted ways in December 2009, proving that celebrity love is difficult to maintain, whether the parties involved are married or not.
Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams
Celebrity splits are all the more shocking, when fans have watched the couple fall in love on the big screen. And that was very much the case with actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, after “The Notebook.”
The co-stars dated from 2005 to 2007, but split for good after a brief rekindling of their romance in 2008, much to the disappointment of the film’s fans.
Here, Gosling and McAdams pose backstage during the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, after winning the award for best on-screen kiss in “The Notebook.”
Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Phillippe
Nothing seems to kill Hollywood love like one of the members of an acting couple winning an Oscar, when the other hasn’t.
It happened to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. It happened to Sandra Bullock and Jesse James. And in October 2006, it happened to Reese Witherspoon and her husband of seven years, Ryan Phillippe. They have two children.
Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston
For seven years, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were Hollywood’s picture perfect golden couple. They were both huge stars and they were both extremely beautiful.
The thing about being extremely beautiful, though, is that other people notice as well. And in January 2005, the couple split after Pitt met Angelina Jolie on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
A whole back of kids and charitable acts later, the rest is history.
