The Nepal quake: Then and now
Last year's massive earthquake in Nepal April 25 followed by a second tremor 17 days later killed nearly 9,000 people in Nepal while damaging or destroying almost 800,000 homes. The violence of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake left countless towns and villages across central Nepal in a shambles. One year later, a shambles they remain.
The country has made almost no progress in rebuilding hundreds of thousands of homes, schools and government buildings, as well as some 600 historical structures, including ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples, monuments and palaces.
Inside Kathmandu Valley almost 2,000 died, and some of the area's most important cultural and heritage sites were completely destroyed. As Kathmandu inhabitants prepare to mark the one-year anniversary of the event, thousands are still displaced and millions are living in temporary shelters.
