Most shocking snubs of the 2014 Oscar nominations
The Coen Brother’s critically acclaimed “Inside Lleywn Davis” was poised to have a major presence at the 2014 Oscars, but perhaps the Academy isn't big on folk music?
The film got passed up for best picture, and the Co-Bro’s missed out on a director nod. Even Oscar Isaac, in his breakout role as the film’s star, did not get nominated for best actor. What the folk?
"Lee Daniels' The Butler"
Maybe it was the early release date. Or perhaps it was because
there were other civil rights-themed movies this year. Whatever the reason, 2014 will
not be Lee Daniels' The Oscars.
"The Butler" was virtually ignored by the Academy, without nominations for best picture, best actor or best supporting actress.
Tom Hanks
2013 was a comeback year of sorts for Tom Hanks, who
starred in "Captain Phillips" and "Saving Mr. Banks." The actor was considered a lock for the best
actor category for his performance in “Captain Phillips,” but the slot was
hijacked from him. Director Paul Greengrass also missed out on a nod as best
director, though the film was nominated for best picture and best supporting
actor.
Emma Thompson
Actress Emma Thompson was surprisingly snubbed for her leading role in “Saving Mr. Banks.” The film also missed out on nominations in the best picture category, and for best actor. Guess there’s no saving Mr. Hanks this year.
Robert Redford
In the same vein, Hollywood icon Robert Redford did not make the best actor nominees list even though his role in “All Is Lost” garnered a lot of attention. The title rings true in this case as the film did not get a best picture nomination either.
"Blue Jasmine"
Woody Allen’s latest movie, “Blue Jasmine,” may have earned Cate Blanchett a best actress nod, which she will most likely win, but the film was passed up for best picture and best director.
"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"
The Nelson Mandela biopic did not get much Academy attention
in a year that was unkind to biopics in general. Take the Steve Jobs biopic starring
Ashton Kutcher, for instance. It was a critical and commercial flop.
"Mandela" is one of the leading contendors for the best original song category, so a win there might soften the blow.
"Fruitvale Station"
This moving drama, depicting the final hours of Oscar Grant III before being shot by a BART police officer, was snubbed by the Academy. The film missed out on nominations for best picture, best actor and best actress, falling by the wayside amidst the rush of holiday season contenders.
"Enough Said"
The late James Gandolfini did not get a best actor nomination for his role in “Enough Said,” though many critics applauded the actor’s performance. As a consolation, we can expect a heartfelt tribute to the actor at the 86th annual Oscars.
"Monsters University"
Pixar did not graduate at the top of its class in 2014 as
Disney’s "Frozen" completely overshadowed the “Monsters
Inc.” sequel. So much so, in fact, that "Monsters University" did not even get a
nomination. Maybe this is a sign that Pixar should stop making sequels.
Other snubs worth noting: Joaquin Phoenix for best actor for “Her,” “Blackfish” for best documentary, and James Franco for best supporting actor with “Spring Breakers.” Yes, Franco was that good.
And in the end, all but one gets snubbed in each category, so tune in on March 2 to watch the 86th annual Oscars.
