Life aboard the USS Harry S. Truman
The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, named for America's 33rd president, and its 5,500 crew members has been involved in more than 2,000 missions against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) targets.
Here's an inside look at life onboard the ninth nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the United States Navy and the eighth in the Nimitz-Class -- one of the largest warships ever put to sea.

Truman's deployment was extended by one month to "keep the pressure" on ISIS until the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier arrived to take over, Vice Admiral James Foggo, commander of the Navy's Sixth Fleet, said.

According to the military, the carrier reached a milestone on June 19, launching its 2,000th aircraft mission in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

In Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan the carrier traveled 50,000 nautical miles and flew more than 9,000 sortie between 2013 and 2014.

The Navy first honored Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, considered one of the most brilliant Navy tacticians in U.S. military history, with the launch of the USS Nimitz. Nine other Nimitz-Class carriers followed. The carriers are powered by two nuclear reactors providing a maximum speeds of more than 30 knots.
