How fit -- or fat -- is your state?

According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every state in the nation had an obesity rate above 20 percent in 2017, and seven states topped 35 percent.

But some states are more obese than others. Where does your state rank? We'll start with states with the smallest population of obese adults...

51. Colorado

Colorado has the lowest adult obesity rate in the country, at 22.6 percent. Denver is also one of the fittest cities in the country, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

Obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more.

As recently as 1995, not a single state in the U.S. had an obesity rate above 19 percent.

50. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., has the second-lowest adult obesity rate in the nation, at 23.0 percent. It was also the fittest city in the country in 2015, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

49. Hawaii

Hawaii has the third-lowest adult obesity rate in the country, at 23.8 percent. 

48. California

California has an obesity rate of 25.1 percent, a slight increase in 2017.

Three of the top five fittest metro areas in the country are also located in the state, according to the American College of Sports Medicine: San Diego-Carlsbad; San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward; and Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade.

Montana has an obesity rate of 25.3 percent.

Utah's obesity rate is 25.3 percent. The diabetes rate in the state is 7.8 percent (compared to 9.9 percent for the U.S. overall).

45. Massachusetts

Massachusetts has an obesity rate of 25.9 percent. 

44. Vermont

Vermont's obesity rate is 27.6 percent, a nearly 3-point increase from 2014 to 2017.

43. New York

New York's obesity rate is 25.7 percent. 

42. Nevada

The obesity rate in Nevada is 26.7 percent.

41. Connecticut

Connecticut's obesity rate is 26.9 percent.

40. New Jersey

New Jersey has an obesity rate of 27.3 percent. 

39. Washington

Washington state has an obesity rate of 27.7 percent. 

Seattle is the eighth-fittest city in the country, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

38. New Hampshire

New Hampshire's obesity rate is 28.1 percent. It has increased substantially from 9.9 percent in 1990.

Minnesota's obesity rate is 28.4 percent. It ticked upwards in 2016 and 2017, after decreasing between 2014 and 2015.

Florida's obesity rate is 28.4 percent.

New Mexico's obesity rate is also 28.4 percent.

34. Wyoming

Wyoming has an obesity rate of 28.8 percent. 

33. Maine

Maine's obesity rate is 29.1 percent.

Idaho has an obesity rate of 29.3 percent.

Ohio tied Idaho, with an obesity rate of 29.3 percent.

30. Oregon

Oregon's obesity rate is 29.4 percent. 

But Portland was the seventh-fittest city in the country in 2015, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

29. Arizona

Arizona's obesity rate is 29.5 percent. 

28. Rhode Island

Rhode Island has an obesity rate of 30 percent.

27. Virginia

Virginia's obesity rate is 30.1 percent.

26. Illinois

The obesity rate in Illinois is 31.1 percent.

25. Maryland

Maryland has an obesity rate of 31.3 percent.

Pennsylvania's obesity rate is 31.6 percent.

Georgia's obesity rate is also 31.6 percent. 

22. Delaware

Delaware's obesity rate is 31.8 percent. 

21. South Dakota

South Dakota has an obesity rate of 31.9 percent. 

20. Wisconsin

Wisconsin has an obesity rate of 32 percent.

19. North Carolina

North Carolina has an obesity rate of 32.1 percent.

18. Michigan

The obesity rate in Michigan is 32.3 percent. 

17. Kansas

The obesity rate in Kansas is 32.4 percent.

16. Missouri

Missouri's obesity rate is 32.5 percent.

Nebraska's obesity rate is 32.8 percent.

Tennessee's obesity rate is tied with Nebraska's at 32.8 percent.

13. Texas

The obesity rate in Texas is 33 percent. 

12. North Dakota

North Dakota's obesity rate is 33.2 percent. 

11. Indiana

Indiana's obesity rate is 33.6 percent. 

10. South Carolina

The obesity rate in South Carolina is 34.1 percent. 

9. Alaska

Alaska has an obesity rate of 34.2 percent. 

8. Kentucky

The obesity rate in Kentucky is 34.3 percent. 

7. Arkansas

The obesity rate in Arkansas is 35 percent. It's one of just seven states in the country where at least 35 percent of adults are obese.

6. Lousiana

Louisiana's obesity rate, once the highest in the country, is a still-hefty 36.2 percent. 

5. Alabama

Alabama's obesity rate is 36.3 percent. 

4. Iowa

Iowa has an obesity rate of 36.4 percent.

3. Oklahoma

Oklahoma's obesity rate is 36.5 percent.

2. Mississippi

Mississippi's obesity rate is America's second-highest, at 37.3 percent. 

1. West Virginia

In 2017, West Virginia had the highest obesity rate in the country, at 38.1 percent.

The state also has one of the highest diabetes rates in the country.
