G-20 protesters clash with police

German riot police stood in front of protesters during demonstrations that were held during the G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

Protesters gather in Hamburg

Demonstrators gathered at a riverside plaza before setting off on a march through the city.

"G-20: Welcome 2 Hell"

Marchers held placards during the demonstration, which was named "G-20: Welcome 2 Hell."

Police clash with protesters

Unrest broke out hours before the two-day gathering of the world's top economic powers convened in Germany's second-biggest city.  

Protesters' demands

Protesters were calling on G-20 leaders for action to fight climate change and address economic disparities around the world.

Police force increased

Hamburg boosted its police force so that 20,000 officers were on hand to patrol the city's streets, skies and waterways.

As crowds of protesters grew larger, German riot police took position by raising their shields. 

Police push activists

Several activists who tried to block a street during the demonstration were pushed to the ground by police officers. 

Peaceful protesters

Others sat on the ground with their hands raised in the air. 

Water cannon deployed

At one point during the demonstration, police deployed two water cannons while they were pelted with bottles by a group of black-clad protesters.

Car on fire

As some members of the crowd became violent, vehicles and other objects were set ablaze in the streets. 

End to march

Organizers quickly called an end to the march after the violence broke out.
