Marching for science against Trump, GOP policies

In the wake of Trump administration policies and Republican efforts to roll back environmental regulations, scientists, students and research advocates around the globe marched on Earth Day to express a common demand that scientists be allowed to conduct research without political interference, and that policies and laws be based on scientific data rather than a denial of facts.

Since Donald Trump became president, he and Republican Congressional leaders have worked to roll back environmental regulations, and reverse the Obama administration’s agenda on combating climate change. They have also proposed massive cuts in the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Immediately after Mr. Trump’s inauguration, all references to global warming and climate change were deleted from the whitehouse.gov website. Fearful of the incoming administration’s energy policies, science advocates began backing up climate data on government websites to ensure it did not disappear for good.

The leader of the EPA transition team for President Trump was Myron Ebell, a noted climate change denier, who has called for the abolition of the Environmental Protection Agency.

In March 2017 EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt chose not to ban a controversial farm pesticide, chlorpyrifos, despite the agency’s own research indicating that the chemical posed a health risk to children and farm workers.

It was learned this week that Dow Chemical (which donated $1 million to the Trump Inauguration) is pushing the White House to scrap the findings of federal scientists who point to a family of widely-used pesticides as harmful to about 1,800 critically threatened or endangered species.

On March 28, 2017, President Trump signed an executive order to begin dismantling environmental regulations implemented by President Obama aimed at aggressively fighting climate change, which included limited carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.
“My administration is putting an end to the ‘war on coal,’” Mr. Trump said.
