Petit has visited Cuba ten times since 2012. His most recent visit was in November 2014 to see his girlfriend who resides in Centro Habana.

Petit said most citizens of Cuba he’s met hold no hard feelings towards Americans and understand it’s the governments that are odds.

“What most surprised me was the friendliness and genuineness of the Cuban people,” Petit told CBS news. “I've yet to meet a person in Cuba that had a negative thing to say about the American people, and that's the honest truth.”

Petit welcomed the news of a shift in foreign policy between Cuba and America.

“I’m thrilled that both countries have expressed a willingness to normalize relations,” Petit said. “I can tell you unequivocally that the people harmed most by the embargo are the Cuban citizens, and they absolutely deserve better.”

Petit said he spoke with his girlfriend who told him Cubans are “happy and optimistic and they hope the American people want this normalization as sincerely as they do.”
