Experts: Zika Virus Could Potentially Threaten Olympics
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An article in Forbes magazine by two bioethicists at New York University called for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil to be canceled or moved as a result of the Zika Virus.
However, while talking with Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Senior Executive Vice President at Cooper University Health Care, Dr. Anthony Mazzarellie, said it is a serious health problem, especially if you are pregnant, but it does not rise to the level of canceling the Olympics.
"I do think the Olympics should go on. I probably wouldn't cancel, but you've got to really think seriously if you are someone, here's the controversial topic, if you're an Olympic athlete who is pregnant, do you bow out of going to the Olympics? If you go nine months past the Olympics, I think you'll see that plenty of people get impregnated, likely, at the Olympics. There's tons of stories, every four years, about the incredible amount of sex that goes on among athletes in the Olympic village. I would not cancel the Olympics. I would advise pregnant women not to go to the Olympics."
