3 women critically injured after hit-and-run in Wilmington, Delaware
The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run crash that critically injured three women early Saturday morning.
Pamela Dupree said it's through the grace of God that her daughter Jasmin is still alive.
"She has been through horrific trauma. She is really badly scarred," said Dupree.
The 35-year-old underwent emergency surgery Saturday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on the 1600 block of Delaware Avenue in Wilmington's Trolley Square neighborhood.
Trolley Square, filled with restaurants, bars and shops, is a popular spot that gets crowded, especially on weekends.
Dupree raced over from Pittsburgh after receiving a call from the hospital.
"They had to do reconstructive surgery on her bladder to stop the bleeding because she had internal bleeding," Dupree said.
"Seeing my sister in the hospital bed broke me, it devastated me, I just broke down and cried because I've never seen her in that much pain," said Joi Dupree, Jasmin's sister.
Dupree said her daughter was with her 36-year-old friend and another woman who is 33 years old. All three women were struck around 2 a.m. and taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Dupree said her daughter's friend was injured worse and has undergone multiple procedures.
"She is just unresponsive. Her family is there now and they came and visited Jasmin and we just stood there and cried and held each other," Dupree said.
It's unclear what exactly led to the crash, but according to police the driver just kept going.
Dupree said her daughter has a long road ahead, and had this message for whoever was behind the wheel.
"You can run but you can't hide and you're going to be found because you reap what you sow. One way or another someone is going to turn you in," Dupree said.
"That's kind of hard to believe this is a nice area... really don't hear too much about that going on around here," said Chaz Crews. "Like I said, I frequent the Trolley Tap House a lot so I'm pretty surprised that something like that happened."
Police have not released any information about the driver or the car involved.
The Wilmington Police Department's Special Operations Division/Traffic Unit is investigating the hit-and-run.
Anyone who witnessed or has video of the crash is asked to contact Master Corporal Paul Simonds at (302) 553-1598.
