Woman rescued from well in Salem County, New Jersey
PILESGROVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) -- A woman was rescued after getting stuck in a well of a home in Salem County, New Jersey on Monday. She was stuck for about an hour in the mud inside the well.
Firefighters say the woman was trapped in a well of a home along Woodstown-Daretown Road.
"We have never experienced anything like this in Pilesgrove and not really in Salem County," Chief Brian Facemyer of the Reliance Fire Company said.
Firefighters worked quickly to pull the woman out. Chopper 3 was there when the woman was rescued from the well.
The Reliance Fire Company that covers Woodstown and Pilesgove says they had help from the Pennsville Fire Company, along with a technical rescue team from New Castle County.
Firefighters used a special piece of equipment to help get the woman out of the well. They used a rope rescue system to reach her because she was so deep in the hole.
"It's a pulley that's hooked to the end of a ladder," Facemyer said. "So that's how we lowered the firefighters down and also brought her up."
They also say part of the woman's leg was stuck in the mud.
"It took a while because of the mud. They had to dig it out in buckets because there was no space down there," Facemeyer said.
Once they pulled her up, she was put on a stretcher with blankets and carried to a medical helicopter that landed near the house. She was then airlifted to Christiana Hospital.
