Winter Storm Leaves Mark On Delaware Valley

By Mike Dougherty, Matt Rivers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Another winter blast blanketed the region Saturday with a modest covering of snow, but it still caused some problems for area residents.

It wasn't the type of storm that would keep most people locked in the house all weekend, but it was enough to make travel dicey.

At the airport, delays averaged about two hours for a good portion of the afternoon (see related story). SEPTA also experienced some delays and canceled trains.

Then there were the roads. Already frozen, they were primed for a coating of snow, and it began sticking almost immediately.

"Roads are terrible," passenger Dominic Franchetti says. "It's slippery out -- slipping and gliding all over the place."

"Can't drive pretty much. You're slipping everywhere," adds driver Steve O'Hara.

David Perri with Philadelphia's Streets Department says they prioritize problem areas when it gets messy out there:

"We always have issues on some of the hillier streets in Philadelphia, so we tend to apply more salt in those areas and plow earlier than we would in other parts of the city."

PennDOT says it had about 200 trucks out plowing and salting, and for the most part, major roads were in pretty good shape. PennDOT spokesman Charles Metzger says they were prepared for this one.

"Our crews have special equipment where it monitors the road temperature to see what kind of material we need to put down and how much."

Fortunately, this latest clipper system came on a Saturday, so there were no major commutes affected.
