What's Cooking on 1060: Hot Dogs, Tacos, and Beer

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) -- The third annual "Dog Days of Summer" hot dog competition takes place on Saturday, July 19th.

Keith Garabedian, owner of Hot Diggity and one of the organizers of this event, says it will take place underneath the Shambles at Headhouse Square, just off Second and South Streets.

Garabedian says 20 chefs are competing for the champion's trophy.

"They all come together and they all present their vision of what a hot dog could be; like, everybody has their own style and you can imprint the attitude of a city on a hot dog.   So each hot dog kind of tells its own story, which is cool.  And so the chefs are able to tell their story too, through a hot dog."

And all money raised will be donated to preservation of the Headhouse Shambles.

A second Union Taco opens this coming Monday, in Manayunk.  Chef-owner Nick Farina says it's his third restaurant overall.

"I think the taco is slowly becoming the new pizza," Farina tells What's Cooking.  "It definitely has a pop culture type thing going on right now -- it's really popular.  We got in a little bit ahead of the curve, I guess, and we've been riding that wave.  So it's been good."

And what pairs well with hot dogs and tacos?  Beer!

The sixth annual "Summer Ale Fest" takes place at the Philadelphia Zoo on Saturday, July 19th.

Laura Houston, with the zoo, says this fundraiser is different from those of previous years in that they've removed the free food and added more beers.

----

"It is going to be all the wonderful, regional, craft beers," she says, "but new this year we have added food trucks, so you'll have the ability to purchase food from food trucks."
